Arequipe

Fresh arequipe from Doña Maria in Barichara, Colombia.

What: A kind of Colombian caramel made with milk and sugar. It’s very sweet and creamy when fresh, or buy it hardened and packaged (a yummy souvenir!).

Where: Fresh arequipe is sold all over Barichara. Doña Maria (Carrera 5 between Calles 3 & 4; look for the wooden “Arequipe” sign, map) makes it well and sells it in several convenient sizes.

Order: Do not leave Doña Maria’s without trying an empanada de yuca! Her creamy arequipe (600 COP for small) is a perfect follow-up.

Alternatively: Arequipes Gloria (Calle 6 No. 9-29) is another great bet in Barichara, especially for packaged arequipe to go.
