Arroz con leche y garbanzo

A cup of arroz con leche and garbanzo from a street cart in Oaxaca, Mexico.

What: Rice pudding topped with a mix of fat garbanzos and pineapple. It may seem like an odd combination, but it works beautifully—and on the street no less! Only in Mexico.

Where: We found this traditional dulce on the corner of Alcalá and Matamoros (map), where a pleasant doña operates a piedrazo street cart.

When: Daily, 10am-10pm

Order: Besides the rice pudding and chickpea cup, sample as much as you can here—the pickled and preserved fruits (syrupy-sweet red plantains, alcohol-steeped figs, mangos in chile) afford such varied, unusual flavors.
