Malasadas

Submitted by cinnamonandcitrus
Leonard's Bakery
933 Kapahulu Ave, Honolulu, HI

Malasadas--Portuguese fried yeast dough, rolled in cinnamon sugar. At Leonard's Bakery, they are made hot to order and have interesting varieties like Li-hing (dusted in plum sugar) and "puffs" filled with coconut, pineapple, or macadamia nut custard.

Ed's note: Portuguese laborers brought this tradition to Hawaii in the late 19th century; today, malasadas are quite popular there. Who knew?
