I have been involved in food in so many different ways in my life. I received an invitation to this site and was happy to learn of it.
In one of my careers I had the great good fortune to fly around the country and attend food shows. One wonderful show was the annual Gourmet Food Show in San Francisco. Wonderful people creating all sorts of products. At one of the shows, The Iowa Honey Association had a booth. I talked to an older honey farmer manning the booth. His name tag said “President I. H A.” I asked him how you got to be the President.
And he told me the story of how he helped build the Space Shuttle.
He was a honey farmer and late one night he was drinking some beer and watching a show on PBS TV about the making of the Space Shuttle. They had a particular problem gluing the nose in place, then attaching mechanically, then getting the glue off. He had an idea (lightbulb!)
He called NASA the next day and somehow got through to an engineer. He explained the tremendous “stickiness” of honey and how he thought honey and some very hot water could solve the glue problem. Soon NASA was buying thousands of pounds of honey to build the Space Shuttle. And my man became the President of the Iowa Honey Association.
