What: A type of palm fruit that’s intensely dry and starchy, almost yam-like in color and texture, and is high in protein, carotene, and vitamin A. The dryness is a surprise, and can be off-putting—but don’t give up on this fruit; it grows on you. They are usually peeled, cut, and served in a bag with salt, lemon, or honey, all of which definitely enhance the flavor.
Where: On the street. Look for bright yellow-red little orbs that resemble tomatoes. (Our pic is from Bogotá.)
Good to know: Our Colombian friends really enjoyed telling us this fruit is considered an aphrodisiac…you be the judge!
