Local rum

A cask of local rum from Museo del Ron in Cartagena, Colombia.

What: Fine aged Caribbean rum (ron) produced by Cartagena’s own Destilería Colombiana.

Where: The handsome Museo del Ron (corner of Calles Gastelbondo and Santo Domingo) carries the local goods, including their own 15-year house rum. They also have a wide selection of rums from other countries, such as Cuba, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela, plus a full bar.

When: Daily, noon-1am or 2:30am (depending on customers); happy hour (2-for-1 cocktails) is 3pm-7pm.

Order: Ask if they have any 12-year Ron Dictador, aged in wood and copper and probably the best local rum you can find. Another good bet is the smoky, smooth, wood-aged 8-year Baluarte. If you’re nice, the bartender may give you some tastes gratis.
