Dulces

Jars and packages of dulces from Cartagena, Colombia.

What: Dulce is the general term for “sweet” in Spanish, and in Cartagena the word conjures up one particular place: el Portal de los Dulces, an arcaded walkway in the Old Town that’s lined with vendors peddling local handmade sweets.

Where: El Portal is located under the colonnade in the Plaza de los Coches.

Order: Whatever sounds appealing among the cookies, fudge, nougats, merengues, dulces de leche, and tropical fruit-based sweets you’ll find stacked in glass jars on each table. We liked the macaroon-like sweets called coco arequipe and coco con panela.
