Curried herring is one of many ways that the oily, cold-water fish is served here. The fish was cut up and in a curry sauce that likely included some mayo, which made this seem like a curry herring salad of sorts (with red onions, capers, rye bread, and butter–the usual accompaniments). The boiled egg was an excellent addition.
